The Devilish Winks

Featuring The Amen Brothers

From our humble beginnings as the duo of guitarist/vocalist Neil Huff and percussionist/vocalist Nick Christiansen, The Devilish Winks have grown into a six-member blend of folk, rock and funk music. Built on the rhythm-section engine of Nick and bassist Shawn Neely, Sandy Van Laningham layers piano and stellar rocks vocals into Neil’s acoustic guitar stylings and vocals, and it’s all topped off with Dave Keller’s screaming electric guitar and Dov Turner’s sultry saxophone and clarinet solos. The Devilish Winks are early 60’s rock, blended with Texas folk music, blended with harmony-rich arrangements that could sound straight out of the 60’s and 70’s. Check out our music and enjoy, y’all!

Inspired by different ballad styles: dust bowl, neo soul, holy roll, Anthony writes songs by stealing from every attainable genre. The Amen Brothers take those punning love poems and mold them into something hip and palatable. The band currently resides in the loving embrace of Chicago, Illinois and the feeling is mutual.

Chicago Songwriter Alliance #9

Featuring:
A special headlining set by Josh Eagle
Donnie Biggins (Of The Shams Band)
Krista Hartman
DJ Mr. Gac
DJ Cotton Fantasy

Music is supposed to be fun, exciting, thought provoking and daring. On every live performance, The Shams Band makes sure that their audience leaves each concert with a personal feeling of satisfaction. Drawing heavily from their Kinks, Rolling Stones, and Wilco influences, singer/songwriters Biggins/Gulyas create distinct, personal songs. Once completed with unique four-part harmonies, the songs come to life, tell stories, and send audiences singing all the way home.

The day after her graduation, Krista Hartman married her guitar and fled to Quebec and then, the South Pacific, Asia and Europe for several years where she performed in bars, wrote songs and busked the streets. Upon her return, she attended The University of Alberta completing a Bachelor’s in Education majoring in English and Theatre. While attending university, Hartman released her debut record PASSPORT in 2005, a reflection of her travels and then in 2010, her second release NOSTALGIA which featured a duet with Ron Sexsmith called “Broken in Two.”

“Krista Hartman has captured the sound of the whole world in her music. That’s due in part to her vast experience with travel and in part to her old-soul world view” FFWD,Calgary

Brown Bag

Featuring Aqueous

Formed in Fall 2010, Brown Bag is a fresh, organic rock & roll band hailing from the Southside of Chicago, IL. Influences range from folk, rock, jam, jazz & more. A unique, yet acquainted group striving to develop a unique sound & style. Brown Bag refuses to stick to one specific musical movement. Their catalog is as diverse as their influences, while remaining concise & cohesive. Currently, Brown Bag consists of Dave Waterman (Vocals/Guitar), Mike Ellis (Keys/Vocals), Jack Pieroth (Bass), Dan Cantone (Guitar/Vocals), and Matt Rezetko (Drums).

Aqueous is a genre melting, funk-tastic groove/rock band known for bringing high-energy shows night after night. Catchy songwriting, shredding guitars, tight infectious grooves, and spot on improvisation keep crowds dancing right from the first beat. The songs themselves are adventurous, smartly composed, inventive, and exuberant. The improv sections add immensely to the experience, as Aqueous heads off in directions heretofore unknown and previously unexplored. Aqueous breathes as one organism when it is in full flight.

Southwest Highway

Featuring Ben Ripani and Ben Burns

Upon Ben’s return to Chicago, following a brief stay in Arizona, the “Ben Ripani Music Co.” (BRMCo) was formed. Blending the sounds of Indie, Folk, Alt.Country & Americana, with lyric based songs and involved texture and sound, it’s hard not to engage in the honesty, moments of vulnerability and truth that is laid on the stage during their live shows. This 4-piece band is comprised of Ben Ripani (guitar, vocals), Colin Fleming (percussion), Dave Marshall (bass, vocals) & Chris Nakielski (keyboards, vocals).

“There’s a twang, an emotion, a polarizing sense of attraction between you and Ben Ripani that is almost indescribable. It’s not quite blues. Or rock. Or folk. Rather, it pulls a piece from each of them and creates a patchwork musical canvas that has a little bit of Dylan, a smattering of Blues Traveler, a dash of Dave Matthews and some Wilco for good measure. Each and every member of the Ben Ripani Music Company plays with a passion and focus that I haven’t seen live in quite some time.”(CBB Fest: Congress Theater 12/4/2010 by Ben Dahl | Lost in Concert)

ItsQVC’s Reinvented Birthday Bash!

Featuring:
Scheme & DJ Scend
Chris Crack
Astonish
Lungz
John Walt
Saba & DJ Damnage
Papi Beatz

Humble, reserved, and laid back… are just a few choice words to describe ItsQVC’s personality. That is, until he picks up a mic and morphs into a lyrical monster. Whether he is owning not only the stage, but also the crowd or in the booth diligently recording one amazing song after another, ItsQVC is an artist that truly loves his craft.

Hailing from the North side of Chicago, Quinton Vontrell Childs — later to be known simply as Q or ItsQVC is quickly making his presence known in the ever- growing, and very competitive Chicago Hip-Hop scene with intelligent, thoughtful words that he delivers with such sharpness and charisma. He continues to grow creatively as he gains more and more support from his peers as well as his increasing fan base. Like many others, his ultimate dream is to have his music recognized and loved worldwide and to become a legend in his beloved city of Chicago — a goal that is well within this reach. However, to ItsQVC, the simple love for music and the escape that it provides him are part of the drive that keeps him going in this industry. A sign of a true artist that is clearly passionate and enamored with his craft.

Prism

Featuring Murderton 4000 & Cousin Affect

Prism is a modern jazz quartet (sometimes quintet) based in Chicago, IL. Although Prism is fairly new to the city, they have already played some great venues including Uncommon Ground, Jerry’s and the House Party Starting Jazz Series. The group is made up of a couple of new arrivals (Lindon on guitar and Luke Angle on drums), as well as a couple of in-demand badasses on the Chicago jazz scene – Dustin Laurenzi on sax and Kurt Schweitz on bass. Prism strives to play sincere and adventurous music that is rooted in the spirit of communication and improvisation found in jazz. Their plans for the near future are to record an album of the material that they have been working on the for the past year or so and to continue seeking new performance opportunities in and around the Chicago area.

The musical project Murdertron 4000 explores human beings’ complex relationship with technology. Instead of simply adopting the shallow futuristic veneer that characterizes much of modern pop music, Murdertron 4000 embraces an approach that digs deep into the roots of R&B, electronica, and jazz. The band takes on a sacred imperative: in a modern world whose vital processes are facilitated by machines, human beings must subdue and rule these machines. It is only dangerous to let our technologies define us if we aren’t the ones writing the definitions.

Cousin Affect’s vision is to offer an alternative to a pop culture which has seen a recent and significant presence of negativity. Working closely with many inner city kids in Phoenix has given Daniel, Mike, and Scotty first hand experience with the lives they hope to affect. This youth is extremely vulnerable to the way pop culture influences them. Cousin Affect is working to send a new message. One that is centered around giving, in all its forms, from community service to simply giving your heart to whomever you meet in your daily life. One that will shed positive light among its listeners. One that can be shared between people of all walks of life. One that will show them how committed Cousin Affect is to the music, their values, and the enjoyment of the general public. They hope to spark a new excitement for positive and progressive music, as well as pushing you towards cultural and social awareness. Cousin Affect seeks to build bridges across all that divides us.
